MMG 1124Y Principles of Effective Counselling

This course will provide the theoretical foundations for the practice of genetic counselling and the role of genetic services in the health care delivery system.  The focus will be on the development of clinical skills to conduct interviews; to present relevant genetic information to individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds in an informed, compassionate manner; and to help obtain the medical and social services they need.  A review of the various psychodynamic approaches to interviewing and counselling via select theories will be incorporated (Time: 1 session, 2 hours per week).
